2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is called an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. Yet, their popularity has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are serious titles centered on frogs.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To grasp this trend, I conducted a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The findings paint a clear picture: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The creature's rising status in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming appears especially strong.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Honestly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs possess natural appealing traits for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and grappling abilities facilitate a host of creative gameplay ideas.
Many of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year yet.
Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we could very well be witnessing a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
