Computer-created pictures purporting to depict Nicolás Maduro detained following his apprehension by the United States have amassed many millions of views online.

How Fake Pictures of Maduro Surfaced Rapidly

Initial fake synthetic picture seemingly displaying him led off a plane surfaced within hours. The picture was unpublished by any verified US channels; rather, it was uploaded on X by an profile purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

Verification involved Google’s SynthID, which found the picture was generated or edited with Google AI.

Further synthetic visuals started circulating in the ensuing period, appearing to show different views of the leader detained. Visible identifying marks on the graphics reveal they were posted by an Instagram profile named ultravfx.

AI analysis indicates the further pictures were also created or altered Google AI.

Authentic Image Posted but Fabrications Persisted

The former US president posted the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. Yet following this real photo was released, AI-generated images kept circulating but were altered to include the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.

Digital forensics indicate the new fake images were first posted on the video platform by a digital art profile. Similarly, analysis confirms these further images were produced with generative artificial intelligence.
