The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together soon."

The previous series wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but confirmation only arrived this week.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the developments of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
