McLaren's Lando Norris Claims Maiden Formula One World Championship in Abu Dhabi In Spite Of Verstappen's Grand Prix Win.
With a performance full of nerveless driving, the McLaren driver has won his debut F1 world title by securing P3 at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Third place was all that was required for the 26-year-old driver, even though his rival Max Verstappen took the victory and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri came home in second.
Norris executed exactly what was needed in an enormously high-pressure battle at the Yas Marina Circuit, featuring a number of audacious passing maneuvers, with flawless work from both the driver and his McLaren squad.

In taking his maiden world championship, Norris is now the 11th British driver to do so. Norris closed out his title with ruthless precision to take the championship that had been so close but remained just out of grasp as McLaren found themselves floundering at the previous two rounds. First a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an egregious tactical decision in Qatar.
This represents a significant accomplishment for the 26-year-old in his seventh season in F1, all of them with McLaren. He remained loyal to the squad even during tough periods, convinced they would come good. That faith was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.

During the race, he made an absolutely bravura move to dive past two cars in one swoop, moving up to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. The rival team instructed their driver to delay Norris, leading to a dramatic overtaking attempt where Norris went up the inside line, almost leaving the track.
The incident was looked at by the stewards, with several nerve-wracking laps passing before a time penalty for his rival and no further action for Norris was decided. This decisive charge without being held up was crucial to his championship bid.
Contrasting Fates
As Norris was crowned the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in form between the two was pronounced. While the new generation battled over the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could manage only eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a dismal ending to a dismal season with Ferrari.
His first season with the Scuderia had been met by enthusiasm but produced what was easily his most challenging year ever, ending up sixth in the championship without a top-three finish. He has looked weary in the closing races and will look to rebuild over the off-season.
