New York state AG has introduced a fresh digital platform encouraging locals to share photos and videos of immigration raids across New York. This action comes just a shortly after a significant enforcement action rattled Chinatown in Manhattan, triggering widespread protests.

American Citizens Arrested In ICE Operation

A lawmaker revealed during a news conference that four American citizens were detained and detained for "almost a full day" after the enforcement action. Protests erupted in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Each citizen deserves to live without fear," the attorney general stated in a release.

"Anyone who observed and recorded immigration enforcement during the raid, I encourage you to submit that material with us. We are committed to assessing these accounts and determining any wrongdoings."

Details of the ICE Action

The enforcement action, which observers say featured over fifty ICE personnel, occurred in a well-known neighborhood of the city where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are commonly traded en masse – often to visitors.

Videos of Tuesday's raid depict numerous masked and armed personnel restraining and arresting a person, and forcing aside bystanders. Throngs of locals followed the agents along the roads. An armored military vehicle was noticed moving along the city streets.

Political Response

In a midweek briefing held with the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, stated that four nationals were taken by federal agents for about 24 hours and that there were "no situations where nationals should be arrested for without cause." He said the individuals were let go on the following day with no accusations made.

"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," the congressman said. "This constitutes a military-style operation to create conflict. It is merely a justification to provoke conflict for this administration to utilize the military to prevent conflict that they initiated."

Widespread Condemnation

Outrage over the immigration operation rapidly grew – every mayoral candidates denounced the incident, including NY's governor.

"Repeatedly, the federal government chooses authoritarian theatrics that instill panic, instead of protection. It must stop," a contender wrote.

NYC immigrant rights groups expressed outrage as well.

"ICE descended on the neighborhood with tactical trucks, covered personnel and tactical gear to target small merchants working to survive. This raid had nothing to do with citizen protection and everything to do with terrorizing immigrant families and communities," said the leader of a rights organization.

ICE Policies

Agency rules forbids the arrest of American nationals and the agency has stated it will not arrest or detain citizens. Nevertheless, independent reporting has discovered that more than 170 citizens have been taken illegally by immigration authorities during the period of the existing leadership.

Current Situation

ICE raids have been becoming more common in the state and across the US lately.
