The Actress Says Speaking About Trump Would ‘Intensify Divisions’ Tearing the Country Apart
Jennifer Lawrence has declared that she no longer feels fitting to speak out regarding the Trump presidency, concerned it could intensify polarizing arguments and increase separation throughout the country.
‘I Question the Usefulness’, Notes Lawrence
During a discussion, she shared, “Back in Trump’s initial term, I felt like I was moving hastily in a panicked state. But it’s become clear, over multiple voting cycles, Hollywood stars do not make a difference in any way on voter decisions.”
The actor went on, “Why continue? I’m just sharing my opinion on something that’s going to heighten conflict tearing the nation apart.”
Political Evolution
Jennifer Lawrence has spoken candidly about supporting conservative and liberal candidates over the years. Raised by Republican parents in her home state, she voted for John McCain in 2008 prior to switching to the Democrats and stating she recognized during the Obama era that backing conservatives was undermining her own rights as a woman.
Earlier Remarks
In 2015, she commented that a Trump victory would be “a catastrophic event” and endorsed Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. More recently, she lent her support to Vice President Harris, “because I think she’s an excellent choice and I trust that she will do whatever she can to protect reproductive rights.”
Hollywood’s Stance
The star was joined by most of Hollywood in her opposition to the former president as a candidate for re-election, but the limited influence stars have over the public choices was underscored by the outcome.
“This upcoming term seems distinct,” said she about his leadership. “Because he stated his intentions. We knew what he did for the previous administration. He was transparent. And that’s the option selected.”
Latest Film
Jennifer Lawrence is highlighting the drama, director Lynne Ramsay’s drama in which she plays a young mom who deals with her emotional state in rural Montana. At a media event for the film in Venice, she spoke about the conflict in Gaza: “I’m terrified. It’s devastating. What’s happening is equivalent to a atrocity and it’s awful.”
Wider Issues
Lawrence added by saying that she was saddened by “the disrespect in the conversations of American politics currently and how that is going to be accepted to the children today. It’s going to be normal to them that leaders are untruthful.”
Lawrence attempted to refocus outrage about the issue to leaders rather than celebrities. “Stay focused on the people in charge,” she advised, seen by observers as a nod to the recent commitment endorsed by thousands of entertainment industry figures to boycott Israeli film institutions.
Individual Insights
Lawrence, who won an Oscar at a young age for her part in Silver Linings Playbook, is attracting awards attention for her portrayal in the new film. Even though Lynne Ramsay has disputed the story being seen as one of postpartum depression and mental illness, the actress shared that she identified with aspects of her role’s experience after the arrival of her second son, soon after shooting ended.
“There was concern about my child,” she commented, “just picturing every negative outcome, and then second-guessing everything that I was trying. I was already in therapy, but I began using a treatment called the prescription and I continued it for two weeks and it was effective.”
Film Challenges
Lawrence also spoke of the empowering aspect of completing nude scenes in the project while she was some months pregnant and unable to exercise.
“It feels nice,” she remarked, about having to abandon insecurities. “I mean, I do have moments where I’m like, What technically are the differences between myself and a sex worker? But it isn’t a major concern.”
