The Showrunner Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... Currently.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
As the debut season of the popular sci-fi show reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the creative team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Audience Reaction
One could easily to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“It's like being an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Does the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to discard a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” he says humorously, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
