The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Adventure with a Touch of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Love Story
In this animated adventure for preteens, the world of fairies focuses on gathering baby teeth of slumbering youngsters and placing treasure under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He is just slightly more curious about the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who provide metal as payment. But Van’s curiosity grows when he catches sight of a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the ugly gnome he expected.
An Unlikely Bond and Common Enemy
Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of teen romance (even though it remains very much suitable for younger kids). The goblin and fairy groups are estranged from each other, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to unite beings as one. Both groups as seen here are incredibly similar, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the other. Fairies are said to be entitled sorts, prone to taking anything they want, while the goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are in fact bright and technologically advanced.
Naturally, such a setup requires a common enemy to join forces against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. There’s no beating about the bush about their intentions: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts
You won’t find very many children’s animations targeting the viewer group that is starting to experience first crushes, but aren’t yet old enough for whatever teenagers are watching instead of popular teen sagas. If your child is in the right age bracket, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but you could do worse.
A Tooth Fairy Tale arrives in movie theaters in Scotland from 10 October and the rest of the UK beginning October 24.
