UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a young woman harboring multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Individual Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
