Nearly a week following the powerful storm struck Jamaica's western region with record force, residents in devastated communities in coastal zones are still desperately waiting for relief.

Numerous thoroughfares are clogged with rubble and communities are stranded with little food, lacking utilities, and unknown restoration dates.

Increasing Casualties

The government said on Saturday that at least 28 people in Jamaica have perished after the storm struck as a monster category five storm with nearly 300 km/h wind speeds.

That is a near 50% jump in the casualty count recently, and totals might grow as authorities make progress into new parts of the island in the near future.

Representatives acknowledged complaints the administration has encountered for its handling, saying there were "various components" contributing to delays.

"Refuelling, Areas for Landing, Accessibility and Timing/Visibility," the official stated.

Within a small settlement adjacent to the coastal town, a local resident leaned on damaged cement. Behind him, the community he's always lived in for all his years has been ruined, along with his livelihood.

"We all devastated here, man," he expressed. He said the boat house was destroyed and is now "leveled"

"The hurricane destroyed everything," he explained, incorporating his vessel, which he refers to as "thoroughly damaged"

Inhabitants of these locations are characterized by dignity and endurance, terms frequently mentioned on community broadcasts and evident in their positive outlook in the trying conditions.

Located below the structure of a severely compromised structure, another resident said he has experienced complete loss, but "we must maintain belief and optimism remains"

"Must continue. Will not surrender," he said.

Agricultural Impact

It is the same tone struck by a local farmer, positioned in his vehicle selling pears, pumpkins, and sweet potatoes – the remaining harvest that was spared from the storm.

Concerning his cultivation area, he said: "Everything is destroyed. Complete demolition happened" But he quickly followed up with: "We must express gratitude for survival"
